On April the 23rd at the St.Charles Family Arena is the DriftSTL.com Drift Day Round 1. 45 drivers from the surrounding areas will gather and shred some tires. Some great photogs will be milling about, snapping shutters and adjusting ISO to deal with your tire smoke as it blocks out the sun. We have, yes, a challenge for you the driver. Ready?
We are looking for a shot, one shot, of one car (maybe two), gettin down and dirty. Are you that driver? Be that driver! What could possibly be that awesome? The perfect tandem, some sick contact, giant smoke screen and you, the proud and strong dipping out of it toward glory and victory!? Maybe a reverse entry or EXTREME ANGLE!!

Get out there, kick some ass and maybe.. just maybe we will pick you. Imagine your car, shining and brilliant...or smashed, broken and primer..or any combination really.. gracing the gloss heavy weight card stock of our next event flyer, to be distributed to Mars and back.

Nocturnal Motor Works/JDM Hookup Open House!

Sunday, "Omar" (Mike) opened his shop in St.Charles for an open house. The day centered around BBQ, shenanigans and essentially a mass show-off session of this mans awesomeness.

Mike at Nocturnal Motor Works specializes in everything from exhaust work, full motor builds and swaps, roll cages and fabrication, cross platform/trans-manufacturer swaps (see > 2JZ E36), custom welding (mig/tig) and he also cooks a mean hot dog.

In stock, thanks to Dewey and JDM Hookup are all the parts from JDM land you would ever want to see in one place. Motor sets, fenders, lights, full suspension kits and all the accoutrement that accompanies such a build. Check them out when ever you get a chance.

It's time for the Annual Cruise!!

In the tradition of DriftSTL, the cruise will come post Midnight Madness, meaning that following Sunday. Mark your calendars and call off of work.
This one will be a bit more awesome than usual. Get your hiking gear, your climbing gear, your dogs, your bikes, frizbees and whiffle balls...

WE ARE GOING TO ELEPHANT ROCKS!!

The morning will start off with a super awesome cruise from the Car Park at Highway 40 and 94 in St.Charles winding through scenic wine country, gliding past the rolling hills and negotiating the carved bluffs and back woods of south central Missouri, ending at the Elephant Rocks State Park in Ironton.

There will be plenty of parking, room for your pets (must remain on a leash (if anyone who cares is around..) and once the group is settled and has explored a bit we will start the grill.

There is so much to see at Elephant Rocks we would like to get there as early as possible. The park opens at 8am and closes at 8pm.

8am - 10am: Meet at 94/40 Car Park
10am: Cruise Starts
12:30 am: Arrive at Elephant Rocks State Park
2:00 pm: LITE THE FIRES! ITS BBQ TIME!!!!!
Room for activities....
8pm: Park Closes

Midnight Madness #3

The second installment of the 2010 Midnight Madness series was Friday, though it officially marked the 3rd event for the year. Our actual second event was canceled due to inclimate weather.

It was a great night with a full turn out, though a few drivers were kicking ass up in Indy. Some new additions were made to the event in the form of a judges booth, rearranged layout and as a salute to our pals at BP, our very own oil slick.

Will Roegge and Joshua Herron are at it again. This time traveling cross country documenting drifting nationwide. I remember talking Joey Redmond of Wrecked Magazine about doing something similar back in 2008, like a sequel to Slide America to see how drifting has changed/grown since the original. But it never made it an further than words.

Anyway back on topic.

This full length feature film will have high expectations from the drift community especially as it is coming from the best guys in the business.. I'm sure we will not be disappointed.

Gateway's New Management

Gateway International Raceway vice president and general manager Terry Harmeson does not have any grand plans for improving the racing environment for his new home track for the 2010 season.

Harmeson, 60, formerly of Champaign, Ill., and a 1971 graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in general engineering, was named Gateway's new leader Nov. 12. His first day on the job was Dec. 1.

"I still have to look at what the track's needs are and what the needs of the community are," Harmeson said. "I've met all the staff here and I've got a great team here. I just want to improve (the facility) and make Gateway the best we can here. Make it the best experience we can for everybody that comes."

Harmeson, whose wife Sue Ellen is from Greenville, Ill., replaces Lenny Batycki, who resigned Oct. 1. Harmeson comes to Gateway from its parent company, Dover Motorsports Inc., which owns Dover (Del.) International Speedway and Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway. He is the fifth general manager at Gateway since the track opened in 1997.

For the last seven years, Harmeson was vice president of design and construction with Dover. Before that he was vice president and general manager for 13 years of the Rollins Environmental Services facility in Bridgeport, N.J., a $30 million-a-year operation with more than 100 employees.

During Batycki's three-year tenure, it wasn't uncommon to find him at the local dirt tracks on any given weekend during the spring through fall season promoting Gateway.

Harmeson doesn't have a promoter's background and probably won't be found at too many of the area dirt tracks in 2010.

"I intend to visit lots of ... whether it's Chamber of Commerce ... a lot of different municipalities," Harmeson said. "All the things that I need to do to continue our relationship with the community. I may go to some dirt tracks. But I kind of doubt I'll do the same as he did."

Harmeson said his main goal is to "evaluate the business and try to improve it to the best we can. Not only for Dover but also for the community. There's no intention, in my mind, that Gateway is going to be closed."

On the day Batycki announced his resignation, nine other people were laid off, fueling speculation that Gateway was about to close.

Instead, Dover ceased operations at its Memphis Motorsports Park last month and handed the Memphis Oct. 23 date for the NASCAR Nationwide Series to Gateway.

That gives the track four major events for 2010 — April 30-May 2 is the weekend for the National Hot Rod Association and July 17-18 is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide Series doubleheader.

We are looking forward to meeting and talking with Terry on how to keep drifting growing in and around St. Louis, as have his predecessors. With an enlarged budget, due to the closing of Memphis Motosports Park, there lies an opportunity to increase our activities as well as aiding outside series in their travels by giving them one more venue.

I hope they have the drag strip dryers back for the Midnight Madness season, so they don't get canceled when it was a little damp like previous times. You might ask why this drag strip item effects us?

Well to make it simple, Midnight Madness has been shut down in the past due to bad track conditions, in which insurance doesn't cover the event if those conditions aren't stable. Also, keep in mind and added NASCAR Revenue and NHRA stuff to the track help keeps it open and might give them enough money to do things. Like smooth out our section of the parking lot (wink wink Nudge nudge), and perhaps allow us to have more event's like the Cold As Balls drift day.

Featured Driver: Rob Perecko and his JZX90

"My 240sx was in rough shape by the end of 2008. I received a large reenlistment bonus and decided to trade the 240sx plus cash for my dream car; a 1996 JZX90 Toyota Chaser (the chassis was legally imported). I first drifted the Chaser during the ClubFR Midwest Drift Cup at Gateway International Raceway. I think I did fairly well, considering I hadn’t driven the car much; was still getting used to right-hand drive; was on used tires front and rear; didn’t have a working handbrake; and it was a high speed 3rd gear course."

Robert Perecko from St. Louis sent me some information about his car and his drifting career, upon my request (thanks again!). His words sparked some motivation in me, and now I’m practically ready for any difficult courses I need to take next semester. Getting feedback from somebody who is already at my goal, and seeing how he got there, really helps me. I basically cut and paste what Rob sent me, but tried to re-word part of it and italicized the other part.

Rob has been involved in drifting for over 5 years, exclusively participating in events from 2004-2009. He got into drifting like most of us, after watching Initial D. Rob’s first drift competition was in 2006. He entered the Race Factory/Drift Session Single Run Competition, which was judged by professional drivers Maeda Ken and Barry Wang, using a borrowed stock Nissan 240sx with welded differential. He scored 4th place and was also included in the event coverage on the Race Factory DVD.

Rob began drifting in 2004 with a Nissan 240SX Hatchback. He went to Drift Session events at Hawaii Raceway Park (HRP) once a month to acquire drifting knowledge and skills. He started on the beginner parking lot course and moved on to the advanced road course. The road course was a “run before I could walk” experience because all the drivers went at the same time. It was scary but fun. It had a long straight-away to practice high speed entries, tight chicanes for transitions, and even a long sweeper. I also ran the local mountain/touge in Hawaii called Tantalus with the team I joined; Pray 4 Rain.

Drift Tengoku Magazine visited a Drift Session where Rob met with Editor-in-Chief Ryuusuke Kawasaki and D1 Driver Tetsuya Hibino. Rob also had the pleasure to see Ross Petty and Forrest Wang in the early days of their careers. Sadly, HRP closed down in 2006 leaving Rob drifting in the Punish’UM Drift Series 2007 events held in the Aloha Stadium parking lot (the last event in Oahu). I learned a lot in Hawaii from my teammates and fellow drivers. I’ll never forget that experience.

In 2008 he moved to St. Louis and continued drifting at Midnight Madness/DriftSTL events and a Southeast Drift Association event in Tennessee. At that time he was driving a 240sx coupe with a KA Turbo. It originally had Megan Racing springs, adjustable KONI Yellows up front and adjustable KYBs in the rear and then was upgraded to Parts Shop Max coilovers before being traded for the Chaser. My 240sx was in rough shape by the end of 2008. I received a large reenlistment bonus and decided to trade the 240sx plus cash for my dream car; a 1996 JZX90 Toyota Chaser (the chassis was legally imported). I first drifted the Chaser during the ClubFR Midwest Drift Cup at Gateway International Raceway. I think I did fairly well, considering I hadn’t driven the car much; was still getting used to right-hand drive; was on used tires front and rear; didn’t have a working handbrake; and it was a high speed 3rd gear course.

He participated in the ClubFR MWDC event at USAIR, and quickly moved from the beginner course to the advanced course. Now that the car had a roll cage, Rob started practicing tandem at USAIR. Unfortunately the competition was over before he was allowed to move to the advanced course, but he also practiced tandem at Midnight Madness in 2009.

My plan for the Chaser is to get around 390ish HP on the twin turbos or a small single turbo upgrade. My clutch is rated up to 400HP and the injectors can handle 420HP, so that’s why I say 390ish. If I stick with the twins I’m gonna need them rebuilt with steel wheels. I have an APEX’i Power FC with Hand Controller sitting at home, so that’s a good start. I need to get a boost controller before I can fully utilize it though. I plan on getting an oil cooler/filter relocation kit to improve reliability.

Comparatively, I’m still a novice driver. I haven’t had much tandem practice but I’m getting better with seat time. Being a member of the military, I bring professionalism and excellence to all my endeavors. I also bring the appreciation shown to those of us in uniform. My car is very unique for its surroundings and always attracts attention wherever it goes. Right now, it’s mostly stock. Imagine the attention it will get when it’s a fully built monster.

We've done it again and not too late..or too soon? (is that what she said?)

To start of the year we printed out some new stickers for ZipTe Clothing as well as our buddies at DriftSTL.com. There are a few of the same and some new ones as well, and in new colors.

We made a limited run of a new classic. Gold DriftSTL stickers.

The staples of DriftSTL. Schwag. We now offer quote a bit more than in previous years, but we are holding fast to the traditions laid out by our predecessors.

Something that we do every year is print DriftSTL hoodies and shirts. The shirts have set us apart as a community and have become (along with vinyl stickers on windsheilds) a means of subliminal inter-community communication, brand advertising and enthusiast identification in the field of day-to-day life.

This year we rolled out two different shirts displaying a set of revamped logos and one new hoodie design, all of which donning a bit more color than previous models. This year however, because we are working with Ziptie Clothing we now have much nicer quality products for the same price as previous years.

It's kind of like Blue Magic heroin in American Gangster.

I am rather proud of this fact as I wear my hoodie almost daily, due to its shear comfort and fit, as well as what it represents for myself. I take solace in knowing that others get to enjoy the same quality and it didn't break their bank, though my credit card bill is currently outstanding XD.

Ok, so our hoodies are far from an exotic and addictive psychotropic drug, and while you may feel good wearing the 100% sustainable organic cotton (if you are into saving polar bears) they will not get you so high that you can not operate heavy machinery nor will they run you the risk of getting 5 - 10 for possession. And the electric blue print of the redesigned, ultra sharp and proportional "Drift" logo will not cause seizures, frothing at the mouth or explosive, erratic or violent episodes after dosage, though the same guarantee does not extend to the on-looker. They may require a stay in rehab, a 12 step program or a trip to a doctor for some sodium valproate after seeing you, but what are we supposed to do about their susceptibility to static spacial patters and flashy colors?

Midnight Sadness

Unfortunately, the forecast I just listened to tells us that we’ve already seen our high temperature for the day. With 1-2 inches of rain in the track already and temperatures already in the 40’s (with no sunlight through the day) we are canceling this evening’s Monster Energy Drink Midnight Madness. We took our best shot at getting this event in and it just didn’t happen. Thanks for your efforts.

This event will not be rescheduled. GIR sponsors that were attending tonight will now have the option to utilize their vendor spot on our closing weekend of October 31 and November 1, which are daytime events.

Besides hailstorms of bullets and hookers, one has to worry about more trying matters such as rain and cold.
